What makes ShadowDeck™ different from traditional decking?
Traditional timber decking often shows unsightly nails and screws and is prone to warping and splitting. ShadowDeck™ uses hidden fasteners that allow the timber to naturally expand and contract with the seasons, preventing warping and giving a superior, long-lasting finish.
What timber is used with ShadowDeck™?
ShadowDeck™ uses 140x21mm pre-grooved domed decking timber, typically Kwila hardwood. Fascia boards are 180x19mm.
Is ShadowDeck™ suitable for commercial use?
Yes. ShadowDeck™ is suitable for both residential and commercial outdoor spaces, including decks, steps, and seating areas.

How do I calculate how much I need?
Use this formula: Width x Length = m². One box of fasteners covers 12m² using 140mm wide decking. You can also use the online calculator at shadowdeck.co.nz.
What is the gap between decking boards?
The ShadowDeck™ fastener automatically creates a uniform 3mm gap between boards, which also provides ventilation under the deck.
Do I need special tools to install ShadowDeck™?
You will need a drop saw with a fine tooth blade, the ShadowDeck™ Deck Wrench, an 18v drill, a sharp chisel, tape measure, square, and plug cutter. A plunge saw and multi-tool are also recommended for best results.
Can I install ShadowDeck™ myself?
Yes, ShadowDeck™ is designed to be easy to install. We recommend reading the full Installation Guide before starting. The ShadowDeck™ Deck Wrench makes it easy to pull boards in tight and straight.
What is the minimum clearance under the deck?
The underside of the deck should have at least 450mm clearance from the ground to allow adequate ventilation, which helps prevent cupping and warping.
Can I picture frame my ShadowDeck™?
Yes! Picture framing creates a beautiful border around the perimeter of your deck. ShadowDeck™ T Shaped Fasteners are used to ensure the decking and picture frame boards sit at the same height for a seamless finish.
How do I maintain my ShadowDeck™?
Clean your deck annually with a stiff brush and deck cleaner, then apply two coats of ShadowDeck™ Decking Oil with at least 5 hours drying time between coats. Keep the deck free of leaves and debris, use risers under pot plants, and avoid water blasting at close range.
How often should I oil my deck?
We recommend oiling at least once a year, or more frequently depending on the deck's location and exposure to the elements.
What is the ShadowDeck™ House2Deck Spacer?
The 12mm House2Deck Spacer creates a clean, consistent 12mm gap between the house and the first decking board, allowing water to drain away from the house. It also helps pick up and align the first board during installation.
